One of the most common complaints I hear from business owners and entrepreneurs is that they have too many thoughts, ideas and scenarios running through their minds at any given time. One minute working on a proposal, the next the mind jumps to writing an overdue article. A few seconds later, it remembers the need to return a business call. The result for the busy professional is frustration, fear and fatigue. Frustration because it seems one cannot get everything done that needs to be. Fear of the results one not finishing. And fatigue because of the mental energy thinking of it all drains. What's a busy professional to do?

Control your thoughts. There's a saying that you "can't stop the birds from landing on your head, but you can keep them from building a nest." The same is true for your thoughts. You may not be able to tell where certain one's come from, but you can stop yourself from dwelling on them. This takes discipline and intentionality. When overwhelming thoughts enter, it's up to you to control them.
Accept the fact that you are human, and that you have limitations. You most likely will not be able to do all the things you want to do at the speed your mind feeds them to you. The sooner you accept this fact, the sooner you will be able to move into productivity via the next point...
Pace yourself. Yes, there's lots to do and more to accomplish. To avoid being overwhelmed and burned-out, though, you must realize that slow and steady really does win the race. What are the manageable steps you should be taking as you move toward your goal?
Time block for success. Write down all the tasks that need to be done and steps that need to be taken as you work toward your objective. Ask yourself, "which task is most important and should be done first?" You may also ask, "what's the ONE Thing," as Gary Keller puts it in his best-seller, The One Thing, " I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" Figure out how long each task will take and give it the appropriate space on your calendar.
Understand that it's a process. You don't arrive at your destination immediately when you are on a long road trip. Enjoy the sights and sounds along the way. You spend more time on the way than you do at arrival.
Regroup if you have to. Life has a way of getting us frazzled. It's normal! When it happens, pause and regroup. Put things back into perspective and keep moving.
End up where you want to be, not where life takes you. This happens only when you CAPTURE life, and live it on purpose!
